Stage 3 of 7, 3–6 years

Early Childhood

Like a young gardener: they plant ideas through play, and friendships and language grow like sprouts.

Children gain independence, imagination and social skills. Play is their main way of learning and making sense of feelings.

Common milestones

  • 3–4 years: speaks in full sentences, takes turns briefly, dresses with help.
  • 4–5 years: tells simple stories, follows 3-step instructions, plays cooperatively.
  • 5–6 years: counts and recognises some letters, writes some letters, handles basic self-care.
  • Throughout: imagination grows; children ask many 'why' questions and test rules.

How parents and carers can help

  • Let them play freely; unstructured play builds problem-solving and creativity.
  • Name feelings ('you're frustrated') to build emotional vocabulary.
  • Give simple choices and chores to build confidence and responsibility.
  • Read together daily; ask what they think will happen next.
