Foundational Learning
Every child reading and counting by age 8.
Reading and numbers are the foundation of a house: everything built later stands on them.
Children who read with understanding and handle basic numbers by Grade 3 keep learning for life. This programme brings home, school and community together around simple, play-based foundational literacy and numeracy.
Why it matters
- Children who can't read with understanding by Grade 3 often fall further behind every year.
- India's NEP 2020 treats ages 3–8 as the foundational stage, and the NIPUN Bharat mission aims for reading and maths skills by the end of Grade 3.
- Play-based early learning builds language, number sense and confidence together.
Key practices
- Read aloud daily in the child's home language and talk about the pictures.
- Use everyday counting: steps, rotis, coins, sharing fruit.
- Play rhymes, songs, puzzles and building games.
- Ask the teacher what your child can read and count now, and what comes next.
- Celebrate small progress; never shame mistakes.
How each role can help
- Parents & carersSpend 15 minutes a day on stories and counting games.

- School leadersTeach at the child's level, assess simply and often, and use play-based materials.
- City locality leadersOpen community reading corners and volunteer storytelling sessions.
- Donors & CSR partnersFund graded books in local languages, teaching materials and teacher training.
