Stage 7 of 7, 15–18 years
Late Adolescence
Like a bird testing its wings: they practise flying on their own while knowing the nest is still there.
Teens build a clearer identity, plan for the future and prepare for adult responsibilities such as study, work and relationships.
Common milestones
- Thinks about long-term goals, careers and personal values.
- Makes more independent decisions; judgement improves but risk-taking can still rise.
- Develops deeper, more stable relationships and understanding of others.
- Handles more responsibility: part-time work, managing time, budgeting.
How parents and carers can help
- Shift from directing to advising; ask their opinion before deciding.
- Discuss safety, relationships, money and online life openly and without judgement.
- Support their interests and plans, even when they differ from yours.
- Be available for emotional support; mental health matters as much as grades.
